Lucas Bjerregaard tied for the third-round lead at Volvo China Open

Lucas Bjerregaard stormed into a share of the lead with Felipe Aguilar as the weather-hit Volvo China Open got back on schedule on the third day in Beijing.

Aguilar had retained his overnight lead when the delayed second round concluded early on Saturday morning, but he was reeled in despite firing a 67 as Bjerregaard returned a flawless seven-under 65 to earn a tie at the top with the Chilean on 16 under par.

Bjerregaard ignited his charge when he holed his approach to the 483-yard third hole for a spectacular eagle, and he birdied the long eighth for the third day running before he picked up further shots at 11 and 12.

The young Dane, who has dropped only one shot in 54 holes, ensured he would take the lead in the clubhouse as he birdied two of the last three holes to match the earlier 65 of former Ryder Cup star Nicolas Colsaerts.

The big-hitting Belgian made huge strides up the leaderboard when he reeled off five birdies in seven holes around the turn, and another at the last got him to within two shots of the lead on 14 under.

Aguilar consolidated his lead as he cruised to the turn in 32, and his fifth birdie of the day at the 11th lifted him two clear of the field until he slipped back into the pack with a bogey at the short 13th.

But he knocked a superb second to eight feet at the closing hole, and a simple two-putt birdie capped a solid 67 and reclaimed a share of the lead with Bjerregaard.

Aguilar has yet to record a top-10 finish this season and ended a run of six consecutive missed cuts at Shenzhen last week, and he credited his improved performance in Beijing to using a new putter that used to belong to Fabrizio Zanotti.

"My putting is my weakest part of my golf game," Aguilar said. "It's been very poor for the last six months and I switched putter this week and that was thanks to Fabrizio Zanotti.

"I went in his bag and took his putter. He was kind enough to let me use it and I think that's been the biggest difference, that I've made some putts that I really needed to make.

"You have so many players out here who can shoot a low score and tomorrow somebody who wins is going to have to shoot a low score. Hopefully it will be me." 

England's Tyrrell Hatton remained on course for his best finish of the season as he posted an entertaining 67 to join Colsaerts, Haotong Li and Alex Noren on 14 under.

Hatton hit a "horrible three-wood" into water with his opening tee shot, but he recovered with a birdie at the fifth and he revived his challenge with an eagle at the eighth before another gain at the next took him to the turn in 33.

He made a mess of the long 12th and ran-up a scrappy six, but he responded in positive style as he birdied three of the final four holes to join the share of third place.

Li delighted the home fans with a run of four consecutive birdies on the front nine as he handed in a 68, while Noren's mixed-bag of a 68 featured an eagle at the eighth, five birdies, one bogey and an ugly double-bogey at the fifth, where he drove into a bunker and found two further traps before hitting the green.

Gregory Havret is a further stroke adrift after a 67 which included six birdies in eight holes from the fourth, while Richard Bland enjoyed a sparkling run of six birdies in seven holes around the turn.

Bland offset a bogey at 14 with another birdie at 15 to get him back to 14 under, but he made further costly mistakes at each of the final two holes and a five-six finish saw him slip four shots off the pace.
